 Revised National TB Control Programme

Magnitude of TB Burden in Uttarakhand
  No State Specific Survey available
NTI has done Zonal ARI Surveys
Uttarakhand (North Zone) The estimated new TB Cases are 257/Lac per year and 95  New  Smear Pos./Lac per year

The National Tuberculosis Programme was begun in 1962 and created an infrastructure for TB control throughout the country. However it has not achieved the desired results. The RNTCP strengthens the existing NTP infrastructure by creating a sub-district-level supervisory team (known as the TB Unit), consisting of two new posts treatment supervisor (Senior Treatment Supervisor, STS) and a laboratory supervisor (Senior TB Laboratory Supervisor, STLS). In addition, a medical officer from the general health system serves as Medical Officer—TB Control at sub-district level who is specifically allocated TB control duties in addition to his other duties.

The goal of RNTCP is to cure at least 85% of new smear-positive cases of tuberculosis and to detect at least 70% of such patients, after the desired cure rate has been achieved.

Directly Observed Treatment, Short-course (DOTS) DOTS is the only strategy which has proven effective in controlling TB on a mass basis.

To date, 148 countries are implementing the DOTS strategy. India has adapted and tested DOTS in various parts of the country since 1993, with excellent results, and the RNTCP now covers the whole population of the country.

Directly Observed Treatment, Short-Course (DOTS)  - Five Components
The main five Components of RNTCP are:

 Political commitment

 Diagnosis by microscopy

  Adequate supply of SCC drugs

 Directly observed treatment

  Accountability

How (Revised National Tuberculosis (RNTCP) Operates

Chest Symptoms i.e. Cough for 2 weeks or more with or without other symptoms -Sputum Microscopy

Treatment categories based on positive/negative status and treatment history

2/3 months conversion positive to negative by microscopy and result by final sputum microscopy at end of treatment.

Operational Units - one microscopy centre/50,000 (01 lac in plains) & one Tuberculosis unit/ 2.5 lakh population (5 lac in plains)
