Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM): An Overview

The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a flagship initiative launched by the Government of India under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its primary objective is to build a seamless, interoperable digital health infrastructure for the country, allowing citizens to securely store and share their longitudinal health records—such as lab reports, prescriptions, and discharge summaries—with registered healthcare providers.

    Key Components of ABDM

    • Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA): A unique 14-digit health identification number that establishes a unified identity across different healthcare providers in India. It includes a custom handle (e.g., name@abdm) known as an ABHA Address to manage health records.
    • Healthcare Professionals Registry (HPR): A verified digital repository of licensed medical professionals—including doctors, nurses, dentists, and AYUSH practitioners—across India.
    • Health Facility Registry (HFR): A comprehensive directory listing public and private health facilities (hospitals, clinics, diagnostic centers, and pharmacies) participating in the digital ecosystem.
    • Unified Health Interface (UHI): An open, interoperable network that enables digital health services like online appointment booking, teleconsultations, and service discovery across various healthcare apps.
    • ABHA / PHR Apps: Personal Health Record applications (such as the official ABHA App or integrated partner apps) that allow citizens to link, manage, and share their medical files based on explicit consent.
